How to Turn On a Sprinkler Valve System Manually

How to Turn On a Sprinkler Valve System Manually

At Big Frog Supply, we understand the importance of a well-functioning sprinkler system. Whether your timer has failed or there's an issue with the wiring, knowing how to manually open a sprinkler valve can save you time and effort.

This detailed guide will walk you through the process step-by-step, ensuring you can activate your sprinkler system without relying on the timer. Let's dive in!

Why Manually Opening a Sprinkler Valve is Beneficial

Manually opening a sprinkler valve comes in handy for various situations. If you're inspecting or troubleshooting your sprinkler system, manually operating the zone valve allows you to bypass the sprinkler timer.

This is particularly useful when the timer is located in the basement, garage, or another room, eliminating the need to constantly run back and forth between the timer/controller and the zone you're watering.

Additionally, if you have multiple valves in a manifold, opening them all from a single location simplifies the process.

Method 1: Open the Manual Bleed Screw

The first method involves opening the manual bleed screw towards the back of the valve near the flow control. Follow these steps:

  1. Locate the manual bleed screw on the sprinkler valve.
  2. Twist the manual bleed screw counter-clockwise until the valve opens. Usually, it only requires a one-half turn.
  3. To close the valve, turn the manual bleed screw clockwise until the valve shuts off.

Opening the manual bleed screw may cause water to leak out, which is normal and nothing to be alarmed about.

Method 2: Turn the Solenoid

The second method involves turning the black cylinder with wires attached to the solenoid. Follow these steps:

  1. Grasp the solenoid firmly and turn it counter-clockwise approximately one-quarter until the valve opens.
  2. To close the valve, turn the solenoid clockwise until the valve closes.

Many prefer this method as it prevents water from leaking into the valve box, unlike opening the manual bleed screw.

Enjoy a Fully Functional Sprinkler System

Following the steps outlined in this guide, you can confidently turn on your sprinkler system manually, even if the timer is not operational.

Whether you're performing maintenance, troubleshooting, or simply need to water your lawn, these methods provide a convenient solution.
